Thanksgiving is approaching, so I’m pretty sure that everyone is going to purchase some stuffs to celebrate the festival and all the companies are looking eagerly forward to seeing customers buy all kinds of good, so they could announce proudly when Black Friday is coming, that their sales report will be real, real BLACK! My wife and I are the type that we make money, save them and spend a lot of them nearly the end of the year. As usual, this year we start to discuss and debate (of course) which one is a must-buy, which one is a need-buy, which one is a NO-WAY! And yes, Jessie is kind of the master of my family, so, we, actually I, have to order things that she thinks are the necessities. While, yesterday she was complaining that sometimes she was tired when preparing doughs and batters, so I just suggested “Why don’t we buy a mixer and release your hands?” As a Material Scientist, I know absolutely zero about a mixer, however since I’m a scientist, the best skill and talent I have is the research ability. Today I did a lot of research and finally decided this one should be the best stand mixer ever, so now I will give you my review of KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixers.
What to Look for When Buying a Mixer?
It didn’t take me too long to figure out several important things you need to keep in mind when buying a mixer. These are:
- The power of the motor
- The capacity
- The mixing mechanism
- The ease of operating and controlling
- The ease of cleaning the mixer
- The accessories and attachments
If you are going to buy a mixer just based on its price and appearance, then you may have troubles particularly if you are going to use it on a regular basis. Please stick with me and allow me to explain why these aspects are listed in my checklist and how KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer is going to relate with each of these entries.
How Many Watts?
I’m dealing with all kinds of specifications and parameters all days, so when I look at some others’ reviews and product descriptions, firstly I will look through the specs. While, KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer has a power of 325-watt. Based on my research, the typical power for a food mixer falls in the range of 220 to 250 watts. We know the working mechanism of mixers is to stir and treat the food by spinning of the beater, which is connected to the motor shaft. Someone may think how many watts the motor power will be is no big deal, but as a matter of fact, it DOES have influence on how well the food will be prepared. Let’s say this in a simple way, if the cookie dough you are about to prepare has little water and much flour, then using a mixer equipped a small-power motor will be not strong enough to ensure the thorough mixing of the raw material, in a worse case, the food may have a chance to damage the motor. A friend of mine had a small mixer, but unfortunately it was burned out because she was using it to prepare tough pizza dough and whle wheat bread all the time. So basically, with a strong 325-watt motor, the KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer delivers the power to handle the heaviest mixtures, and mix large batches easily and quickly and can definitely fulfill your daily mixing tasks.
I have discussed about the power of the motors in the previous section. So when you are choosing between a small mixer and a bigger one, what others are important besides the motors? Let me tell you now, the CAPACITY! I have read a lot of reviews for mixers that basically I found if one was asking about which size he/she should buy, the answers were surprisedly same, THE BIGGER ONE!!! Why? Try to think about you are hosting a family party in a weekend and you need to prepare the pizzas and cookies for ten people, do you really think you could achieve that in time? You can’t be serious, because that is a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE! Based on this fact, the KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer is one of the best choice because it has a 5-quart polished stainless steel bowl and you can easily complete the job that the smaller mixers can never do, and never mind to do that with your hands. It is heavy-duty, but easy to handle with the ergonomic handle, which is big enough to handle large batches of heavy mixtures. Also, this ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit hands and makes it very comfortable when lifting the bowl. People may think this product is not an appliance that you can store away and conveniently pull-out when needed so it’s better to find a sizeable amount of counter space for it. While actually, this machine is so pretty that you don’t want to lose the chance to show it off when your friend happens to visit your kitchen!
How Does It Work?
The KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer has a unique mixing action that during operation, the beater spins in clockwise direction as the shaft spins in the counter clockwise direction. The unique mixing action makes it possible to achieve a thorough bled of ingredients and you don’t have to rotate the bowl any more. This special working mechanism also contributes to its “heavy-duty” feature.
Is It Easy to Operate and Control?
The answer is YES! Just like the operation of normal mixers, you can easily handle this product. The speed of the KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer can be adjusted through the control module. There are in total 10 speeds that allow the user to select which one is the right speed for the mixing job of certain ingredients. Believe me, it should be fun to do some experiments that average your mixing ingredients into 10 pieces and stir them from very high to very slow each time and then decide which one is the perfect one.
Is It Easy to Clean?
The ease of cleaning of the mixer is also an important thing you should consider because you don’t want to clean a bunch of mess each time with a lot of effort. The KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer has a series of design to keep the mixer easy to clean. It has a poring shield fits around the top of the bowl and prevents ingredient splash-out. The large chute ensures the ease to add ingredients and the tilt-back mixer head allows for easy access to bowl and beaters. Moreover, the lock lever can hold the mixer head safely in place and the bowl will be fastened tightly to the base.
Versatile Accessories and Optional Attachments
The KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer offers you more! This model comes with three attachments, including a flat beater, a wire whip and a dough hook. Their shapes and structures decide their applications. The flat beater is the ideal accessory for making normal to heavy batters from cake mixes to firm cookie dough quickly and thoroughly; the wire whip incorporates the maximum amount of air and is used for egg whites, mayonnaise, fluffier whipped cream and angel food cakes; the dough hook mixed and kneads yeast dough, saving both time and effort of hand-kneading. All of the three accessories are solidly constructed and by a simple twist, they are easily secured to the beater shaft.
That’s not the end! There are many other optional attachments (sold separately) from citrus juicer to sausage stuffer. The KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixer can handle just about any kitchen jobs and the only thing you need to do is to search and select a certain attachment, I’m pretty sure you will get your favorite one！
