Surfing online is so popular that even the kids at young age could easily manage the computer or laptop to learn something new, play games communicate with others. However, while it is quite helpful as useful means to obtain information and knowledge, it could also cause some side effects, which could be harmful to the safety of the users if not handled properly, especially for kids. So how to protect your family and your kid’s privacy is a big question you have to address seriously. Here are some tips concerning kids’ safety that you should tell them to remember when they are connected to the Internet.

  1. The kids should be extremely careful about what they would share online; especially it is closely related to the personal and sensitive information about them and their family members. Although the websites are well-protected by privacy settings, sometimes they could be bypassed and hacked into. So tell your kids to be vigilant against careless leakage of private information and data whenever they are on line.
  2. The kids should be told that if they want to share their or the family’s photographs on line, they should be selective about where to post or upload them. Choose those who are reliable with good reputation. If kids like to post the photos of others, tell them that they should be allowed first with the permission of such people before they could do it.
  3. When kids are using a computer or laptop, which could be also touched by other users, remember to log out completely and properly from any of their accounts such as e-mail or social networks, when they finish surfing on Internet with such shared computer or laptop.
  4. Making friends on line could definitely enlarge kid’s social networks and help them know more about the people and the world. However, meeting any of the friends the kids have met online personally would bring something unexpected or dangerous. So tell kids that they should let parents know their planned meeting before they really do it so as to avoid some unnecessary risks.
  5. As in our real world, there requires politeness and respect online as well. The kids should be clear that once connected with the Internet, if they are participating in group discussions online or posting their comments on certain websites, they should keep polite and reasonable, which would be minimize or prevent any hostile words and action against them.
  6. Ask kids to observe the rules and regulations in regard to surfing on Internet both at school and home. They should be well-informed about what they are allowed to do online and what they are strictly forbidden to do. If there is a bottom-line for them to keep, it would be helpful for them to use Internet more smartly and carefully.
  7. In order to prevent the kids from access to some bad and harmful websites, parents could apply some tools such as Net Nanny or firewall software for this purpose. So advice the kids not to use some hacking techniques to destroy such protection and they should know it is good and necessary to protect their rights and interests.
  8. Online, there are different kinds of surfers, some are nice and some are bad. If the kids come cross something unacceptable and some persons unbearable, tell them to let parents and teachers know about it. There is always the way out for such problems, but keep silence would do no good to them.
